My name is Malie Lalonde Delisle and I have been in my program for now one year and a half. I'm writing this glossary for my teacher Luiz Lima.
I will talk about geology and prospecting in the north. It is the first step to find an ore body to have a future mine. Geologists spend their day walking in the forest to find rock outcrops. They look if there are interesting minerals in it. They take samples that will be brought in a laboratory for analyzation. My glossary will help people to get more familiar with prospecting and geology word. The glossary will contain 20 words with pronunciation, definition, translation, example and image. I picked the most used word in prospection. I will find the definitions in Google. Try to learn those word so that you can have a conversation with others.
claim
noun
A mining claim is a specific parcel of public land staked by a prospector or mining company to secure the rights to explore for, develop, and extract locatable mineral deposits. It grants exclusive, time-limited possession for mining purposes, requiring legal registration and annual work or fees to maintain.
Example: Mining compagnies put a lot of money in claims that they buy.
en: droit exclusif d'exploration
compass
noun
An instrument containing a magnetized pointer which shows the direction of magnetic north and bearings from it.
Example: The measurements were taken by means of a COMPASS.
en: boussole
diamond drill
nouns
A diamond drill is a precision rotary tool utilizing a hollow, cylindrical bit embedded with industrial-grade diamonds to cut through hard materials like rock, concrete, or glass.
Example: The drillers use a diamond drill to make rock core.
en: foreuse à diamant
geological formation
adjective, noun
A body of rock with consistent physical characteristics (lithology) that is distinct enough to be mapped on the surface or traced in the subsurface.
Example: The geologists need to know the geological formation to do the drilling step.
en: formation géologique
geologist
noun
An expert in or student of geology.
Example: I believe Verne represented his true feelings through the voice of Axel when presenting his arguments against the journey as he knew such a feat could not be undertaken but the professor, with his convincing and logical arguments, persuaded him, as much as the reader, that it could and no budding GEOLOGIST would turn down such an adventurous quest for knowledge.

geology
noun
Geology is the scientific study of the Earth, investigating its composition, structure, physical features, and the processes that shape it.
Example: Absolute dating methods have revolutionised GEOLOGY and archaeology.
en: géologie
lithology
noun
The general physical characteristics of a rock or the rocks in a particular area.
Example: The geologist carefully examined the lithology of the canyon walls to determine how the rock layers were formed millions of years ago.
en: lithologie
map
noun
A diagrammatic representation of an area of land or sea showing physical features, cities, roads, etc.
Example: This MAP of the Roman town of Silchester provides us with proof of the formal layout of Roman towns that enables us to use a model to identify its functions.

mine
noun
A mine is generally defined as a site where mineral deposits are located, which may include both underground and surface operations. While underground excavations are typically classified as mines, surface operations like rock quarries also fall under this category.
Example: This is particularly the case on the route down to the underground MINE and it may be necessary to install steps with proper handrails.

mineral
noun
A solid chemical element or compound (as diamond or quartz) that occurs naturally in the form of crystals and results from inorganic processes.
Example: The soils here are coarse and sandy and have a high MINERAL content which yields Riesling well.
en: minéral
ore body
noun
An ore body is a continuous, well-defined, and concentrated mass of mineralized rock that contains enough valuable metal or mineral content to be mined, processed, and sold at a profit.
Example: The mining company developed a plan to extract the copper-rich ore body safely and efficiently.
en: corps minéralisé
outcrop
noun
A rock formation that is visible on the surface.
Example: After a big day, the geologists finally found the outcrop
en: affleurement
petrology
noun
Is the scientific study of the foundations of Earth's crust and the geological processes that shape and transform it.22 mai 2025.
Example: His research in petrology focuses on the composition and origin of metamorphic rocks.
en: pétrologie
prospection
noun
Prospection: the initial stage of searching for valuable mineral deposits through direct observation, field mapping, and surface sampling.
Example: Mining and PROSPECTION for metals in Early BA Britain - making claims within the archaeological landscape.
en: prospection
quartz vein
nouns
A quartz vein is a tabular or sheet-like body of crystallized silica (quartz) that fills fractures, faults, or fissures within host rock.
Example: The geologist carefully examined the quartz vein running through the granite cliff, noting the streaks of gold embedded within it.
en: veine de quartz
rock
noun
A rock is a naturally occurring, solid, cohesive mass of geological material, typically composed of one or more minerals, mineraloids (like glass), or organic matter.
Example: The bracketed n's represent culturally agreed natural such as animal, plant or ROCK.
en: roche
rock analysis
nouns
Rock analysis is the scientific examination of rock samples to determine their physical, chemical, and mineralogical properties, primarily used in geology, mining, and engineering.
Example: Every day, geologist have to do at least one rock analysis.
en: analyse de roche
rock core
nouns
A rock core is a cylindrical sample of rock, typically 1 to 3.5 inches in diameter, extracted from the subsurface using a diamond-studded hollow drill bit.
Example: The drillers drilled 500 metres pour rock core today.
en: carotte de forage
rock hammer
noun
A rock hammer is a specialized tool with a hardened steel head, featuring a flat face for breaking rocks and a pointed pick or chisel end for splitting, prying, and extracting samples.
Example: Geologists use a rock hammer to breaker a rock sample.

noun
A small part or quantity intended to show what the whole is like.
Example: Removed and marked the outline of the SAMPLE on the section drawing with its SAMPLE number.
