Hi, my name is Carmen and welcome to the glossary that I made for the first year students like me in the Medical Ultrasound Program. It was my third year in the technique and the last year at the college. I want to make a glossary that could help the new students in the program. There for, this is some words that I found from our English book, the power point of my teachers of the technique and the internet.
aerosol
noun
A colloidal suspension of particles dispersed in air or gas.
Example: A natural aerosol can be the means of spreading contagious agents.

artifact
noun
Representation of information on the image that comes from echoes that do not correspond to an actual anatomical structure which is sometimes useful in determining a structure.
Example: The posterior acoustic shadowing and posterior enhancement are some useful artifacts in medical ultrasound.

aseptic
adjective
Free from contamination caused by harmful bacteria, viruses, or other microorganisms.
Example: Surgeons use aseptic techniques to minimize the risk of infection.

Not cancerous
Example: This cyst is benign.

biopsy
noun
The removal and examination of a sample of tissue from a living body for diagnostic purposes.
Example: The biopsy has been ordered to confirm the presence of liver cancer.

blood vessels
noun
The network of tubes through which blood is pumped around the body.
Example: The blood vessels transport blood cells, nutrients, and oxygen to the tissues of the body.

calcification
noun
The hardening of tissue or other material by the deposition of or conversion into calcium carbonate or some other insoluble calcium compounds.
Example: Arterial walls may develop calcifications, which reduce the ability of the vessels to transport blood adequately.

The ultrasound beam enters the body from the lateral (right or left) direction that divides the body into two parts (dorsal and ventral).
Example: Brains were cut into coronal blocks of 1 cm thickness for evaluation.

Example: Thousands people die of heart disease each year.

Examination based on the Doppler effect (modification of the frequency of waves when the source of these waves and the observer are in relative motion), allowing in particular the detection of anomalies in blood circulation.
Example: The Doppler effect is the change in the frequency of a wave in relation to an observer who is moving relative to the source of the wave.

The process by which water or other liquids flow away into pipes or into the grounde.
Example: Technologists need to assist the doctor for a drainage.

The quality of being able to send back an echo.
Example: A liver ultrasound showed areas of increased echogenicity.

Example: Patients may be advised to fast for a certain period of time prior to surgery, medical procedures, or certain blood tests.

Example: The fetus is well developed in its mother's belly.

needle
noun
A very thin, pointed steel tube that is pushed through the skin so that something (such as a drug) can be put into the body or so that blood or other fluids can be taken from it.
Example: Reusing the same needle for different patients can cause transmission of disease, such as AIDS.

An abnormal narrowing of a passage in the body.
Example: Spinal stenosis happens when the space inside the backbone is too small.

Example: The surgeon made a transverse incision across her abdomen.
