This glossary has been made for the people that are going to study in medical imaging.
C-arm
noun
A C-Arm machine is an advanced medical imaging device based on X-ray technology. They are primarily used for fluoroscopy capabilities, although they have radiography capability too. C-Arm is called so, due to its C-shaped arm, which is used to connect the x-ray source on one end and the detector on the other.
Example: I used the C-arm today for four patients.

Cathode

The cathode is the negatively charge of the electrode of an electrical device.
Example: The cathode of the x-ray tube is broken.

Cervical collar
Noun
Cervical collars are used when a patient has had a surgical intervention of the cervical spine, to immobilize the neck.
Example: You have to pay attention when you move the patient because he have a cervical collar.

Contrast agent.
Noun
Contrast agent is a substance used to increase the contrast of structures or fluids within the body.
Example: The tech is using contrast agent for the scan.

Dosimeter
Noun
A dosimeter is a device used to measure an absorbed dose of ionizing radiation.
Example: I need my dosimeter every time I go work.

Exposure button.

The act of exposing sensitized photographic film or plate.
Example: I clicked on the exposure button to make the x-ray.

Gurney
Noun
A gurney is a wheeled stretcher used for transporting hospital patients.
Example: The patient arrived for his Scan on a gurney.

Lead apron
Noun
Lead aprons are a type of protective clothing that acts as a radiation shield.
Example: I used my lead apron because I needed to stay close to the patient when I took his X-ray.

Mammography

Mammography is a technique using X-rays to diagnose and locate tumors of the breasts.
Example: Women need to come do a mammography when they are 55 years old.

Mobile x-ray

Mobile x-ray systems are often used to perform chest radiography to patients who cannot be moved to the Radiology department.
Example: My colleague used the mobile x-ray do the x-rays of a patient that couldn't come to the radiology department.

MRI

MRI is a medical examination performed using magnetic resonance imaging.
Example: This patient needed an MRI for is cerebral bleeding.

Nuclear medicine
Noun
Nuclear medicine is a medical specialty that uses radioactive tracers (radiopharmaceuticals) to assess bodily functions and to diagnose and treat disease.
Example: Patient often mixes the nuclear imaging and the medical imaging when they come in a hospital.

Positioning pad

Positioning pads are keeping patients in fixed positions during x-raying.
Example: I need to use this positioning pad to keep the patient still during the shoulder x-ray.

Radiologist
Noun
A radiologist is a person who uses X-rays or other high-energy radiation, especially a doctor specializing in radiology.
Example: The radiologist said that there was no fracture on the wrist of the patient.

Sprain
Noun
A sprain of the bone the result of a wrench or twist of the ligaments of a joint.
Example: The woman came to do X-rays for her sprain ankle.

Wheelchair
Noun
A wheelchair is a chair fitted with wheels for use as a means of transport by a person who is unable to walk as a result of illness, injury, or disability.
Example: The tech need a wheelchair for his patient after the exam.

x-ray receptor
noun
Image receptors means any devices, such as a fluorescent screen or radiographic film, which transforms incident x-ray photons into a visible image or into another form which can be made into a visible image by further transformation.
Example: I put the x-ray receptor under the the patient.

X-ray tube

An x-ray tube is a device for generating X-rays by accelerating electrons to high energies and causing them to strike a metal target from which the X-rays are emitted.
Example: I used the x-ray tube to make my images today.
