Light

10 Physics terms

The purpose of this glossary is to learn, and remember what we have studied in class about reflection.

Diffuse reflection
It is a noun
Diffuse reflection is the reflection of light from a surface such that an incident ray is reflected at many angles, rather than at just one angle as in the case of specular reflection.
Example: When you reflect light in a non smooth surface with a flash it won't be a perfect reflection like a smashed piece of illumine foil and a light
ca: Reflexió difusa
Diffuse reflection being used with Specular flection
Electromagnetic wave
it is a noun
Electromagnetic waves or EM waves are waves that are created as a result of vibrations between an electric field and a magnetic field.
Example: infrared waves, X-rays, gamma rays, etc.
ca: Ona electromagnètica
A Electromagnetic wave spectrum with a visible chart of light
Illuminance
It is a noun
the amount of luminous flux per unit area.
Example: A flash light, or a candle...
ca: Il·luminació
The light from a lamp as a Illuminous object
non-luminous
adjective
Not capable of producing light, but possibly capable of reflecting light from another source.
Example: Hydrogen burns with a pale blue non-luminous flame, but will not support the combustion of ordinary combustibles.
ca: no lluminós
a non-luminous object can't produce light but sometimes it can reflect it, like the picture
Optics
It is a noun
the scientific study of sight and the behavior of light, or the properties of transmission and deflection of other forms of radiation.
Example: prisms, and that familiar experiments in optics could be repeated with electric waves which could not affect the eye.
ca: Icsptica
Light traveling trough an object with optics
Photons
It is a noun
a particle representing a quantum of light or other electromagnetic radiation. A photon carries energy proportional to the radiation frequency but has zero rest mass.
Example: In contrast to that, vision and olfaction are achieved by detection of photons
ca: Fotons
A light source in the galaxy being represented as a type of photon
Reflection
It is a Noun
the throwing back by a body or surface of light, heat, or sound without absorbing it.
Example: reflection According the Beattie (1995:114), one of the main problems of EIA is its false perception as a scientific tool.
ca: Reflexió
a Reflection of a mountain on a lake
Shadow
It is a Noun
a dark area or shape produced by a body coming between rays of light and a surface.
Example: He saw something moving in the shadows.
ca: Ombra
A shadow being casted by a lamp post
Specular reflection
It is a noun
Specular reflection is a type of surface reflectance often described as a mirror-like reflection of light from the surface. In specular reflection, the incident light is reflected into a single outgoing direction. ... It is further reflected at a similar angle.
Example: is a mirror, which is specifically designed for specular reflection.
ca: Reflexió especular
Specular flection being used with diffuse reflection
Transparent
adjective
(of a material or article) allowing light to pass through so that objects behind can be distinctly seen.
Example: Glass is a transparent material.
ca: Transparent
Light passing through widows of a cathedral because glass is transparent
