This glossary contains the words people can use to describe the Prehospital Emergency Care field.
ambulance
noun
A vehicle specially equipped for taking sick or injured people to and from the hospital, especially in emergencies.
Example: We called an ambulance.

anaphylaxis
noun
An acute allergic reaction to an antigen (e.g. a bee sting) to which the body has become hypersensitive.
Example: Each year about 200 adults and children in the United States die from food-related anaphylaxis.

asthma
noun
A respiratory condition marked by spasms in the bronchi of the lungs, causing difficulty in breathing.
Example: He suffered much from asthma, a complaint which was aggravated by the London smoke.

noun
The provision of what is necessary for the health, welfare, maintenance, and protection of someone or something.
Example: The care of the elderly.

noun
A medicine or other substance which has a physiological effect when ingested or otherwise introduced into the body.
Example: A new drug aimed at sufferers from Parkinson's disease.

dyspnea
noun
Difficult or labored breathing.
Example: Many soldiers presented with acute dyspnea.

A serious, unexpected, and often dangerous situation requiring immediate action.
Example: Your quick response in an emergency could be a lifesaver.

A continuous pain in the head.

The state of being free from illness or injury.
Example: He was restored to health.

hemorrhage

An escape of blood from a ruptured blood vessel, especially when profuse.
Example: The patient had a massive hemorrhage of the brain.

noun
Intubation is a procedure that's used when you can't breathe on your own.
Example: Endotracheal intubation can be used successfully under the right conditions.

Example: Several police officers received medical treatment for cuts and bruises.

Relating to the anatomy, functions, and organic disorders of nerves and the nervous system.

pain scale
noun
A pain scale is a tool that doctors use to help assess a person’s pain.
Example: A person usually self-reports their pain using a specially designed scale.

paramedic
noun
A person trained to give emergency medical care to people who are injured or ill, typically in a setting outside of a hospital.
Example: Paramedics can stabilize patient on the way to hospital.

A person receiving or registered to receive medical treatment.
Example: Many patients in the hospital were more ill than she was.

Example: Professionals such as lawyers and surveyors.

sphygmomanometer
noun
An instrument for measuring blood pressure, typically consisting of an inflatable rubber cuff which is applied to the arm and connected to a column of mercury next to a graduated scale, enabling the determination of systolic and diastolic blood pressure by increasing and gradually releasing the pressure in the cuff.
Example: Blood pressure is measured with an instrument called a sphygmomanometer.

stethoscope
noun
A medical instrument for listening to the action of someone's heart or breathing, typically having a small disk-shaped resonator that is placed against the chest, and two tubes connected to earpieces.
Example: The physician will listen to the child's chest with a stethoscope for specific sounds that indicate lung inflammation.

uniform
noun
The distinctive clothing worn by members of the same organization or body or by children attending certain schools.
Example: Paramedics have a dark blue or fluorescent yellow uniform.
