Civil Engineering Sreencast

Introduction

Hello and welcome. For those of you who don't know about me my name is Thomas Landry, and I am currently studying a civil engineering course at Montmorency College. I was part of this program for over two years and this semester will be my fifth and second to last semester before my diploma. After I graduate from CEGEP and become a civil engineering technician I intend to go to university and become an engineer. In addition, this program and these courses focuses on designing, building, and maintaining infrastructure like roads, bridges, buildings or even dams. The courses cover the materials, structural analysis, environmental and ecological systems. Graduates pursue careers as civil engineers, construction managers, transportation planners, or environmental consultants, which will contribute in building the world of tomorrow.

The Problem

One common problem in civil engineering is the inaccurate or inefficient designs and documentations. In fact, civil engineering projects can often involve complex designs that need to be clearly communicated to contractors, architects, and other engineers. Manually drafting or unclear drawings can lead to construction errors, project delays and safety risks.

The Quest

Now, let me introduce you to the AutoCAD, a fantastic online tool that can help us polish and make our work more efficient. You simply type ‘AutoCAD’ into your browser, and you’ll be greeted by a website called 'Autodesk'. You then click the link and enter the website where you go in the product section and download 'AutoCAD'. After being downloaded open the digital product and see the clean, intuitive interface.

When entering the interface you will see a blank canvas and at the top of this canvas you will see a tool bar that has many features. In the top left corner of this tool box, in the rectangle named 'draw' you can make lines and shapes to create any drawings you wish. To the right of the 'draw' rectangle there is the 'modify' rectangle where you can see many icons that can alter, trim, stretch, copy and much more to modify any drawings. Then, to the right of the 'modify' rectangle there are many other important tools such as layers. The layers help visualizes the drawings by separating the drawings in different layers. In addition, in the top left corner of the page next to the AutoCAD logo you can save and print your drawings. Finally below the logo there is a menu bar where all different settings and options are located.

The Solution

The solution to the problem is this whole program because this versatile application is useful in many cases and can bring the efficiencies and accuracy to a higher and better level. For example, AutoCAD can help create street models to help with the sewer systems beneath the street and also have different POVs. This software can also help you create foundation plans for buildings and can help you create a house with every component inside of this wall. Finally you can also make steel pieces plans to help you create steel buildings.
