Hi, my name is Laurie Joly-Bernier. I live in St-Eustache. I have been in College Lionel-Groulx for one year now in Visual Arts. The Glossary that I made will definitely help new students to understand and also be like a reminder for the student who already knew that. Each word in the glossary will be use a lot in everyday class so you absolutely need to know and understand them. After learning all the words and definition you will now be able to talk like a real artist and really understand some arts piece.
chromatic circle
The chromatic circle is a clock diagram for displaying relationships among the 12 equal-tempered pitch classes making up the familiar chromatic scale on a circle.
Example: The chromatic circle, allows to have a visual of a great diversity of colors at one time.

Complementary colours
The complementary colours are those which combined give grey and white color.
Example: Two complementary colours are diametrically opposed in the chromatic circle.

composition
The action of assembling thing together to form a balanced piece.
Example: The composition of an art piece.

contraste
The opposition between two or many things.
Example: The contrast of black and white.

criticizing
To think, describe and analyse the work to make a great criticizing.

dark light
A soft, subdued light, it's what we call the twilight.
Example: The dark light, in a painting is the contrast between light areas and the dark one.

distortion
changing the usual shape of an object to change emotions and ideas.
Example: she uses the distortion to make a face of a girl but in a multiple pieces.

drawing on the scale
The scale of a drawing indicates the value of the relationship between drawn dimensions and actual dimensions.
Example: Make a drawing at the real scale.

foreground
In art, we got two plans when we look at a piece of art, the foreground who is in the front of us and the background away from us.
Example: We can see the dog at the foreground

glacis
The technique to obtain a transparent rendering with paint.
Example: You need to use the glacis technique to have a real sensation in this painting.

horizon line
A straight line which takes the form of the terrestrial curve and which forms the horizon line therefore the limit between the earth and the sky.
Example: we see a sailboat on the horizon.

hue
The degree of paleness of a color that varies with the added white.
Example: The hue of the grey here is very pale.

negative space
The surrounding space an object.
Example: Make a draw only with the negative space.

neutral colors
tree colours are into the neutral colours, the white, the grey and the black.
Example: I want to use only the neutral colors in this piece.

proportion
The proportion is the relationship between the dimensions of the different parts of the study. It can be the body in drawing or painting, or a construction in architecture.
Example: The proportion between the hands and the arm isn't correct.

reproduction
A reproduction is to copy or changes a little bit something who already has been done. a reproduction is not authentic.
Example: That a reproduction of the painting of Eugene Delacroix.

rhythm
principle of composition that consists of repeating elements in order to create an illusion of movement.
Example: There's a lot of rhythm in your paint.

shortcut
An effect of perspective creates by magnifying the closest parts of an object to make the illusion that the rest of the object is backed away.
Example: She had made a shortcut of the body of the personage to make perspective, so we could see all of his body.

trompe-l'oeil
The technique of trompe-l'oeil is to make an illusion that the object is in tree dimension.

vanishing point
The vanishing point, is an imaginary point intended to help the designer to construct his work in perspective.
Example: You need to make a vanishing point to make sure you draw is in perspective.
