5 Paralegal techniques terms

Hi, my name is Melina Louis Jean and I’m a student in paralegal techniques. I have about a year and a half left in the program. This glossary will be for the one who is interested in the program, or for the one that have difficulties and need some help. For each domain, there is different type of word that might not be familiar. This glossary will help you know familiar word that law domain use often.

Actus reus
Noun
Action or conduct which is a constituent element of a crime, as opposed to the mental state of the accused.
Example: Miller's defence was that there was no actus reus coinciding with mens rea.

Civil law
Noun
The system of law concerned with private relations between members of a community rather than criminal, military, or religious affairs.
Example: ‘’An interconnected global legal system, embracing elements of criminal, commercial, and civil law.’’

Noun
A written or spoken agreement, especially one concerning employment, sales, or tenancy, that is intended to be enforceable by law.
Example: "both parties must sign employment contracts"

Example: The accused entered the courtroom handcuffed to two police officers.

The intention or knowledge of wrongdoing that constitutes part of a crime, as opposed to the action or conduct of the accused.
Example: "A mistaken belief in consent meant that the defendant lacked mens rea"
