Diagnostic Imaging Glossary

20 Diagnostic Imaging terms

Hi, my name is Amélie, and I am a student at Ahuntsic College. I am currently doing basic courses to lighten my next session since I am starting the program of Digital Imaging in the fall. I have created this glossary to help students already studying in this program and also for the new ones to understand, learn and become familiar with some basics' terms. This glossary contains 20 field-related terms that are in the book Actively Engaged Online and for each of them there is a definition, a pronunciation, a picture, an authentic example, a translation and a part of speech. My research is based on, Wikimedia, Google, Lextutor and Google Translate. After familiarizing yourself with all these words, you will be able to use them easily.

Example: Premature coronary artery disease is common and leads to an early death.
fr: artère

Example: The brain is one of the most sensitive organs in any vertebrate organism and damage to it is most of the time irreversible and fatal.
fr: cerveau
Lobes of the brain, color-coded.
cancellous bone
noun
Cancellous bone is the mesh work of spongy tissue (trabeculae) of mature adult bone typically found at the core of vertebral bones in the spine and the ends of the long bones (such as the femur or thigh-bone).
Example: Moreover, bone consists of two different layers denoted as compact cortical bone and trabecular bone (also known as spongy cancellous bone).
fr: os spongieux

catheter
noun
A flexible tube inserted through a narrow opening into a body cavity, particularly the bladder, for removing fluid.
Example: Insert a urinary catheter to monitor resuscitation if the patient is dehydrated.
fr: cathéter
Illustration depicting a catheter on the pulmonary artery
computed tomography
noun
A form of tomography in which a computer controls the motion of the X-ray source and detectors, processes the data, and produces the image.
Example: Future directions for detection of coronary re perfusion after thrombolytic therapy Coronary echocardiography, Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), Cardiac computed tomography scanner (CT) and trans thoracic Doppler echocardiography (TTDE) are just some of the emerging techniques used by clinicians to accurately evaluate IRA patency, providing information on coronary reperfusion.
fr: tomodensitométrie
Computer tomography of human brain, from base of the skull to top. Taken with intravenous contrast medium. It was taken Mars 23, 2007 on the uploader, after a 20 minute episode of homonymous hemianopsia with loss of the left visual field, but nothing strange w
diaphysis
noun
The shaft or central part of a long bone.
Example: There were no significant differences in cortical volumetric bone mineral density (vBMD) at the radius or tibia diaphysis between the groups.
fr: diaphyse
Detail of femur diaphysis cross section.
epiphysis
noun
The end part of a long bone, initially growing separately from the shaft.
Example: The bite had left a sub-circular depressed fracture about 6 mm across on the dorsal surface of the shaft, just above the distal epiphysis.
fr: épiphyse
Projectional radiograph of the foot of an 11 year old boy, showing a usual proximal epiphysis, as well as a pseudo-epiphysis.
fracture
noun
The cracking or breaking of a hard object or material.
Example: There is a postmortem fracture of the neck of the right humerus.
fr: fracture
 X-ray of bimalleolar fracture
heart
noun
A hollow muscular organ that pumps the blood through the circulatory system by rhythmic contraction and dilation. In vertebrates there may be up to four chambers (as in humans), with two atria and two ventricles.
Example: However, when it reaches the point of severe hypoxia, it induces metabolic depression, it shuts down its neuronal activity to the maximum, slows down its heart beat, breathing and relaxes arteries to make the pumping of blood to the brain much easier.
fr: coeur
An illustration of the human heart.
kidney
noun
Each of a pair of organs in the abdominal cavity of mammals, birds, and reptiles, excreting urine.
Example: Kidney failure is incredibly debilitating, the only treatments being transplanted or daily dialysis treatment, without which the patient will die.
fr: rein
3D medical animation still showing kidney structure, its layers, renal artery, veins & ureter.
lungs
noun
Each of the pairs of organs situated within the rib cage, consisting of elastic sacs with branching passages into which air is drawn, so that oxygen can pass into the blood and carbon dioxide be removed.
Example: The type of pain you are describing indicates to us that you may have some fluid collected in your lungs, which can be the result of a number of things. One of the things that can cause this problem is cancer in your lungs, and we would like to investigate you for that possibility whilst you are in hospital.
fr: poumons
Basic human airway anatomy. Objects can enter the trachea and lungs via the mouth or nose.
magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
noun
MRI stands for magnetic resonance imaging. It's a medical examination performed using magnetic resonance imaging.
Example: After looking at the MRI, the doctors concluded that she needed surgery.
fr: imagerie par résonance magnétique (IRM)
Philips MRI machine in Sahlgrenska University Hospital in Gothenburg (Sweden).
spleen
noun
An abdominal organ involved in the production and removal of blood cells in most vertebrates and forming part of the immune system.
Example: Bilirubin is the breakdown product of red blood cells, it is produced in the spleen and from there travels in the blood to the liver.
fr: rate
A medical animation still of spleen structure & exact location.
swelling
noun
An abnormal enlargement of a part of the body, typically as a result of an accumulation of fluid.
Example: There is significant swelling and bruising with severe pain even at rest which significantly interferes with function Ligament injuries result in gross' instability and significant decrease in tensile strength, with muscle injuries causing severe muscle spasm and 'splinting', while the injured muscle is incapable of exerting force.
fr: gonflement
Signs of Arthritis. Swelling of the ankle joints which is indicative of an underlying inflammatory process.
thorax
noun
The part of the body of a mammal between the neck and the abdomen, including the cavity enclosed by the ribs, breastbone, and dorsal vertebrae, and containing the chief organs of circulation and respiration; the chest.

A photographic or digital image of the internal composition of something, especially a part of the body, produced by X-rays being passed through it and being absorbed to different degrees by different materials.
Example: In the process of x-rays crystallography x-rays are fired at the crystal where they undergo diffraction through the lattice formed by the molecules, the diffracted x-rays are then detected, typically by a CCD. A larger magnitude of the angular deviation of the x-ray corresponds to a higher resolution of the structure.
